Cost Effective Backup Solution
Backing up of your Data is critical to the survival of your business. Disasters are known to happen so the more you are prepared for them, the better off you will be when they do happen. It is not a matter of ‘If’ they will happen but ‘When’ they will happen. Once you have that mentality that the worst can happen, you can plan accordingly.

A good Backup System which includes Symantec Backup Exec version 12 software, a Tape Backup System and the labor to set it up can cost you $5000 and more. This is a very standard price for a backup solution that most establishments have to pay to protect their Data from “what if’s”

My solution is to purchase a 500GB external hard drive from any retailer. CDW, BUY, Best Buy. Once you have received the external hard drive, connect the external hard drive to one of the USB slots in the rear of the PC you want to backup. This should be the Server or Desktop that has the information you want to backup. Microsoft Windows Server has a backup utility. You can find this utility by going to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.

Once in the application, Select the Backup Wizard (Advanced) Option. At this point, you need to make a decision as to what items are critical that you want to backup. You will only have 3 options with this Backup Application:
1. Backup everything on this computer.
2. Backup selected files, drives, or network data.
3. Only backup the System State Data

Option 1 is going to backup everything on that Hard Drive Partition. This means if you have a C:\ drive, it is going to backup everything on there. If you also have a D:\ drive, you have to manually add this drive. The 500GB External Hard Drive should be more than enough to store all of your data. I would recommend setting up a weekly schedule when you are not actively using the PC/Server to backup your Data. I would also recommend you setup the backup to do a ‘differential’ Backup which means the next time it backs up your data, it is only going to backup any data that has changed from the last time you backed up your entire Drive.

Option 2 is entirely up to you. Select the folders and files that you think are critical and include the System State Data.

Once you select the option you are comfortable with, select the external hard drive as the destination directory. The application will prompt you for a filename. Give it a name you will remember such as Daily or weekly Backup.
